How Altars Are Blessed

Altars appear both indoors and outdoors in these books — the Handbook describes one set at the center of a building, a flat, uncut rock about knee height, while Moses is shown building his own altars directly upon open land, at the site of the burning bush and later on the mountain itself. An older elder usually performs this blessing: taking a pinch of white prayer corn, they begin at the eastern entrance or approach and sprinkle it in a line toward the altar, laying whatever’s left directly on the stone. This is repeated once for each of the four directions in turn, pausing each time to pray specifically for the blessing that direction represents before moving to the next.
