Pronunciation: SEE uv BAH-ah
Where Heleah Once Stood
For seven days the ark was driven eastward by the wind, past hilltops crowded with the wicked, who cursed Noah and then turned on one another as the last of the hills went under. At the end of those seven days the valley of Heleah was no more, and in its place stood a vast sea of dancing waves. Deep in its depths the spirit of death can still be felt, and so it has been called the Sea of the Night, or the Sea of Death — a spirit hidden from before the face of Anokeesed (Grandmothers 12:69–70).
Named from the Ark
After the seventh day the sky cleared. In the soft moonlight all the islands were now covered, and the waters grew calm. In the morning, when the people beheld the great sea, they called it the Sea of Ba-ah, “because it was the sea of rising up” (Grandmothers 12:71).
Named Again by Achee’s People
After the Flood, the Lord called Achee to gather his family, along with Jared and their friends, and lead them out of the Land of Shinar. About forty-three souls departed northward, crossed a small mountain range, and followed streams of water down to a great sea (I Achee 1:92–96).
The sea had been changed by the Flood, and trees could still be seen standing in the water by the shore — so they named it the Sea of Ba-ah, “to gush up or swell over” (Strong’s #1158). Trees being plentiful, they built barges there; but the Lord would not suffer them to remain, so they crossed the Sea of Ba-ah and journeyed eastward into a part of the earth where man had not been (I Achee 1:97).
Today’s Black Sea
Before the Flood, the Lord told Melchizedek that Noah would ask the waters of the earth to cover the entire valley of Heleah, “to become the bottom of the sea.” The book’s own footnote identifies that sea as the Black Sea (Melchizedek 11:100, note 99).
On the Map
The Sea of Ba-ah appears on the overview map at the back of the Grandmothers book, alongside the River Sim, Noah’s camp, Lamech’s camp, Qatar, Mount Qatar, and the Shaman Sea.
