Pronunciation: ah-CHEE

The Brother of Jared

Achee is the Brother of Jared spoken of in the Book of Mormon, in the Book of Ether. The First Book of Achee opens as “an account of the Brother of Jared who is called Achee,” and gives his line: Shem “was the father of Lud, who was the father of Achee, who was the Brother of Jared, and Jared was the second son of Lud” (I Achee 1:1–2). The Books of Achee were first published as The Sealed Portion of the Brother of Jared (Achee, title page). In the Book of Ether, Moroni wrote “the very things which the Brother of Jared saw” (Ether 1:98, RLDS; quoted in Handbook p. 604).

The Meaning of His Name

“The name Achee by interpretation means the Brother, for he was the brother of all the living” (I Achee 1:3).

His Character

“He lived with the Eerkodeshoi as did Enoch the seventh from Adam, and much of the time no man knew where he was… he walked with the Lord and was His companion, but the wicked called him a wild man and they greatly feared Achee. So powerful was his word that the Eerkodeshoi obeyed him and the elements responded to his righteousness… and the Lord had respect for Achee as he was a large and mighty man but gentle of spirit and gifted with a mild and kind manner” (I Achee 1:3). After the Lord called him as a High Priest, “he walked in the power and dignity of his calling before them, and he was as a little child before them in his charity and manner” (I Achee 2:109).

Tipharah

“In the first year of the building of the Great Tower… Achee took Tipharah to wife, and they together dwelt among the Eerkodeshiy, and she was with him in all his doings, and she was strong of spirit for she feared not the wicked” (I Achee 1:81). When the rebellious turned against him, “Tipharah was compelled to protect him” (I Achee 2:110); she sang the Protection Song over him, “probably saving his life” (Handbook p. 107).

Taught by His Grandfather

As a lad the Brother of Jared went with his grandfather Shem to the Feast of Shabuwa, and in his twelfth year Shem took him up Mount Pethach and renewed Shabuwa from the rising to the setting of the sun. “Achee loved his grandfather… and Achee was taught all things by his grandfather, and he viewed the records” (I Achee 1:64). The Trump of Shem was handed down to him there (I Achee 11:88).

The Stones of Mount Shelem

To give light for the voyage across the deep, Achee went up “the mountain called Shelem, which means mountain of tranquility,” and “did molten out of a rock sixteen small stones that were clear like unto glass.” He laid them on the altar around a small fire and asked the Lord to touch them. “The Lord reached forth with His arm from out of the midst of the fire, and His hand touched the stones one by one with His finger.” Achee fell to the earth: “I never had supposed that You had flesh and blood… And now I know Oh Lord that You are a man and You can love me, and that we can walk together as friends in the earth” (I Achee 1:114–117).

Friend and Brother

Putting His hand on Achee’s shoulder, the Lord asked, “And what shall my new name be by your hand.” Achee fell at His feet and said, “Oh my Friend and Brother,” and the Lord said, “And so it shall be Friend and Brother to Man. And in the land where I shall lead you it is my desire that you establish me as friend to the people, and it is my desire that the people do not have a man rule over them, but that their lives walk in the way with me as a friend, that I may lead them and keep them free” (I Achee 2:106–107).

Sixth of the High Priest Communities

Achee is sixth in the order of the 24 High Priest Communities. “Achee is the brother to Sarahel, and the whale is the elder of the seas, and by the ministry of Achee in his writings man may be clean before the Lord” (I Achee 2:111). Sarahel (“Power of God”) is the oceans, and teaches humility (Handbook p. 518). His community established God’s ability to walk among the wicked, which allowed Christ “to be born in the flesh, live among sin, and yet be perfect and clean,” or more simply said, “to be clean” (Achee, Appendix p. 659).

Shabuwa in the Promised Land

In the Promised Land, “Achee and Tipharah made ready to proclaim for the first time the Covenants of Shabuwa,” and he established “that Shabuwa would be the religion of the Promised Land” (I Achee 11:87–97). Afterward “the Lord drew near one day and called out to Achee, and the Lord said, Achee my friend” (II Achee 5:2). See Shabuwa.

His People

Achee’s people joined with the people of Ooma, and the two peoples embraced “because Achee had established Shabuwa to be observed upon the Promised Land” (Moses 12:96–98). “And the descendants of Achee, the grandson of Melchizedek, did in fact perform all their vital repentance along their way, and they never had kings, and had no slaves nor armies” (Moses 12:104).

His Record

“Achee wrote all of the vision upon a stone… and God made a covenant with him that He would preserve his writings forever upon the earth… and God said that in the end of days He would reveal the writings of Achee to whomsoever He would. And thus ends the account of the record of the Brother of Jared who is called Achee” (II Achee 9:67–68). The Judgement Tablet “was written by Achee,” and on it is “the whole course of history from before creation till after the Final Judgement” (Handbook p. 481). The Lord calls the Books of Achee “the writings of my son Achee” (Melchizedek 1:35).
